　レイの秘密にも興味があるし.
　そう告げるミンに、レイは笑みを浮かべて頭を下げる.

「悪いな」
「いいさ. ただ……あの本は相当昔の代物だ. その作者を見つけるのは、かなり難しいと思うが」
「それでも出来る限りでいいから、頼む」

　改めて頼むレイに、やがてミンは頷いて承諾した.
　元々、ミンはレイに対して大きな……信じられない程に大きな借りがある.
　それを返せるのであれば、それこそ可能な限りのことはするつもりだった
　だとすれば、本の作者の情報を探すことなど造作もない.

「ふむ、そうだな. レイ、いっそエルクにも頼んでみるか？」

　ミンの口から出たのは、レイにとってもちょっと信じられないような一言.
　何故そこでエルクの名前が出てくるのか、と.
　勿論エルクが異名持ちのランクA冒険者だというのは知っている. 知っているが……それでも今回の件には明らかに向いていないのは事実だった.

「そもそも、エルクは本を読むのか？　とてもそうは見えないけど……」

　エルクの性格は、まさにガキ大将がそのまま大人になったようなものだ.

　異名持ちというのは、普通では信じられないような偉業を達成したり、それだけ衝撃的な行動をした者につけられる.
　そのような人物というのは、大概にして色々と癖のある人物であることが多い.

（一応、俺も異名持ちなんだけどな）

　レイもまた深紅の異名を持つ冒険者だ.
　自分では異名持ちの中ではまともな方……だと思っている訳ではない.
　喧嘩っ早い性格をしているのは自覚しているし、セトの件もあって敵対した相手には容赦をしないというのもある.
　ただし、自分から理不尽な要求をすることはないので、そこそこ真面目……という認識ではあるのだが.
　レイの横で話を聞いていたマリーナも、笑みを浮かべてミンの言葉に無言で同意する.
　そしてミンは、レイの言葉に何かを誤魔化すかのように口を開く.

「つまりだ. このギルムに限らず、エルクは色々な人に慕われている. そんなエルクがもし情報を集めていると知れば、様々な場所から情報が入ってくる可能性が高い」
「……なるほど」

　数秒前の考えなど吹き飛んでしまったかのように、レイは納得の表情を浮かべる.
　エルクはその性格がガキ大将なままなこともあって、非常に面倒見がいい.
　ある程度名前が知られている冒険者の中でも、エルクに世話になったという者は決して少なくないのだ.
　そんなエルクが情報を集めていると知れば、エルクに恩義を感じている者が色々と手を貸してくれるのは間違いなかった.

「どうだろう？　エルクもレイの頼みとあれば、まず断ることはしないだろう」
「うん、分かった. 頼めるか？」
「ああ、勿論！」

　レイの言葉に、ミンは嬉しそうに笑みを浮かべて頷きを返す.
　莫大な借りのあるレイに、何とかそれを返すことが出来る……そう思うと、ミンが嬉しく思わない筈がなかった.
　これで全ての借りを返せるという訳ではないのだが、それでもいくらかは借りを返せるだろうと.

「じゃあ、私は早速エルクにその辺を言ってくるよ」

　そう告げると、ミンは嬉しそうにエルクの下へと向かう.

「ま、エルクの協力を得られるというのは、結構よかったんじゃない？」

　マリーナはギルドマスターをやっているだけに、エルクの影響力をレイよりもよく知っている.
　だからこそ、今回の件でエルクが協力してくれるというのであれば、それなりに情報を得られるかもしれないと考える.

「あー！　またギルドマスターがレイ君を独占してる！」

　そう叫んだのは、ケニー.
　相変わらずと言うべきか、寒さに対抗するべく何枚もの服を着込んでおり、着膨れと表現するのに相応しい姿になっていた.
　そしてケニーの隣ではレノラが雪で冷やされた果実に舌鼓を打つ.

「ねぇ、ちょっとレノラ. ギルドマスターに何か言うことないの！？」
「え？　えっと、そうね. ギルドマスター、ケニーがちょっとうるさいので、少しレイさんをケニーに譲ってあげてくれませんか？　どうせギルドマスターはこれからレイさんといつでも一緒にいられるんですし、少しはこの哀れな猫に恵んでやって下さい」

　果実に集中しているせいか、レノラの口から出たのは暴言と表現するのが相応しい言葉だった.
　普段いつも言い争いをしているケニーに対するものだけに、色々と溜まっていたのだろう.

「レノラ……あんたねぇ. 私のことをそういう風に思ってたの？」
「……ああ、幸せ. 寒いけど美味しい. 焚き火があるから、そんなに寒いのも気にしなくていいし」

　ケニーの言葉を右から左に聞き流し、レノラは焚き火の側で果実を味わう.
　雪上バーベキューパーティではあるが、当然何らかの熱源の類は必要となる.
　炭火でバーベキューをしているので、その周辺にいる者は暖かいかもしれないが、この中庭はそれなりに広い.
　とてもではないが、料理をしている周辺の熱だけでは寒さを凌ぐのは無理だった.
　それを見越してか、中庭の何ヶ所かではいつの間にか焚き火が行われており、レノラとケニーがいるのも、その焚き火の中の一つだ.
　……そんな焚き火の側にいても、ケニーは着膨れしたままなのだが.

「ちょっとレノラ！　私の話を聞きなさいよ！？」
「いいから、ほら. ケニーも少しパーティを楽しんだら？　折角ガメリオンの肉を食べられるんだし」
「何でレノラは果物で、私は肉なのかしら？　……まぁ、美味しいからいいんだけど」

　不満を覚えながらも、ケニーはレノラから受け取った肉へと齧りつく.
　……何だかんだと言いながら、結局皆がバーベキューパーティを楽しんでいるのは間違いのない事実だった.
