周囲が暗闇に沈む頃……トレントの森を、十人を超える者たちが進んでいた.
　夜にギルムの外に出るというのは、自分の腕に自信がない限り、自殺行為でしかない.
　特にこのトレントの森では、昨夜ランクBモンスターのケルベロスすら出たのだから.
　それを考えれば、普通ならそのような場所を移動しようとは到底思えないだろう.
　だが、トレントの森を進む男達はそれを知っているのかいないのか、怯えた様子もなく真っ直ぐに進む.
　松明の類は持たず、月明かりだけを頼りにして進む.
　雲一つない夜空だったが、それでも月明かりだけで進むことが出来るのは、全員がある程度夜目が利くからだろう.
　トレントの森に沿って移動すれば、もう少し移動しやすい.
　だが、木々があるからこそこの集団は見つかりにくいのだ.
　目的の場所を守っているのは、いずれも腕利きの冒険者.
　それも、中には深紅の異名を持つレイや、その従魔のセトまで存在するのだ.
　可能な限り見つからないように行動するのは、当然だろう.
　そうして進むこと暫く……やがて、先頭を進んでいた男の足が止まる.

「止まれ. ここからは、今まで以上に慎重に行く. いいか？　確認しておくが、俺達に必要なのは情報だ. 別に冒険者達と戦うことではない」

　その言葉に、皆が頷く.
　夜にギルムの外に出ているのだから、当然のように自分達の腕には自信がある.
　しかし、自分の腕に自信あるからといってレイと遭遇しても無事に切り抜けられるかと言われれば、その答えは否だ.
　いや、レイだけではない. 生誕の塔の近くには、腕の立つ冒険者やリザードマン達が多数いるのだから.
　だからこそ、今回の狙いは戦うのではなく、あくまでも情報の確認だった.
　夜にこうして移動しているのを見られれば、間違いなく怪しまれる.
　だがそれでも、昼に移動するような真似をした場合は、トレントの森には樵や冒険者の姿があり、何よりも生誕の塔の護衛をしている者達にその明るさから見つかりやすい.
　夜の移動には多大な危険があるのは間違いないが、それでも昼に移動するよりも安心なのは間違いなかった.
　また、この集団はそれなりに腕が立つ者達で揃えられている.
　低ランクモンスター程度であれば、対処するのは難しい話ではなかった.

「全員、散らばれ. ここからは、誰かが見つかったらすぐに撤退することになる. 繰り返すが、俺達の仕事はあくまでも情報を入手することだ. いいな？」

　先頭にいる男の言葉に全員が頷き、それぞれが散っていく.
　それを見送ると、部隊を率いていた男も行動を開始した.
　湖からそれなりに離れた位置にいるのだが、そのような場所であってもここまで来れば明かりに困ることはない

（スライム、か. ……あれがか？）

　現在の位置からでも、見て分かる炎の塊.
　前もって得られた情報によれば、既に数日は燃え続けているとのことだ.
　それだけ燃え続けているというのは、男にとっても驚くべきことなのは間違いなかった.
　スライムが燃え続けている明かりは、男達にとって幸運にもなれば不運にもなる.
　湖の様子を偵察するには、その光源は十分.
　だが同時に、そのスライムが燃えている明かりがあるので、周囲に散らばっている者達が見つかりやすくなっているのも、また事実だった.

（しかし、あの湖は……どこまで続いている？　前もって教えられていた限りでは相当な広さだという話だったが、それは誇張でも何でもなかったらしいな）

　燃えているスライムの明かりで見える範囲だけでも、湖は遠くまで広がっている.
　正確には、スライムが燃えている明かりだけでは全てを見通すことは出来ない.

（それに、あの塔. ……あれがリザードマンが住んでいるという塔か. 日中になれば、上から周囲を見回すことが出来る以上、やはり偵察をするのなら夜だな）

　トレントの森の木々に紛れ、そして夜の闇を味方にすれば、余程のことでは見つかることはない.
　……そう、余程のことがなければ、だが.

「ぐわぁっ！」

　夜の闇に聞こえた悲鳴.
　誰がそのような悲鳴を出したのかは、分からなかった.
　それでも男が引き連れてきた者の一人が見つかったのは、間違いなかった.
　少ない確率としては、自分達以外の同じように湖や生誕の塔の様子を見に来た別の集団が見つかったというものもあるが……それは、あくまでも希望的観測だろう.
　そうして、誰かが見つかってしまった以上、ここもすぐに見つかってしまう可能性がある.

（くそっ！　もう見つかったのか！）

　偵察を開始してから、まだ十分も経っていない.
　出来ればもう少し偵察していたかったが、見つかってしまった以上はどうしようもない.
　急いでその場から離脱しようとし……瞬間、今までの隠密行動とは全く逆の派手な動きでその場から跳ぶ.
　そして男がその場から跳んだ一瞬後、男のいた場所には一本の槍が突き刺さっていた.
　跳躍した男は、地面に突き刺さっている槍を見て思わず叫ぶ.

「黄昏の槍っ！？」

　その槍は、非常に有名な槍だ.
　レイが持つ武器として.
　そうなると、今の攻撃をしてきたのは誰なのか. それは、考えるまでもなく明らかだった.

「意外だな. この攻撃を回避するのか. ……まぁ、ここまでやって来たことを考えれば、それもおかしな話ではないのか？」

　そう言いながら空から降りてきたのは、レイ.
　セトに乗って空から攻撃した……のではなく、スレイプニルの靴を使って空中を歩きながら攻撃し、そして降りてきたのだ.
　いつもレイと一緒に行動しているセトは、現在他の冒険者達と一緒に湖や生誕の塔の様子を窺っている者達を次から次に襲撃している.

「何故だ！　この距離なら、グリフォンでも気が付かなかった筈だ！」

　短剣を構えながら、男は……覆面を被った男は叫ぶ.
　男にしてみれば、今回の一件は危険ではあっても、その危険は最低限対処出来ている筈だった.
　なのに、何故自分達のことを見つけることが出来たのか.
　そんな理不尽から叫んだのだが、それを聞いたレイは呆れの視線を向けながら口を開く.

「セトの五感がどこまでの鋭さを持っているのか……それを本当に理解した気になっていたのか？」

　少しだけ得意げに告げるレイだったが、実際にはここは湖が見えはするものの、かなり離れているのも事実だ.
　素の状態のセトの五感であれば、その存在に気が付かなかった可能性も十分にある.
　だが……それはあくまでも、素の状態での話だ.
　セトにはスキルがある.
　そしてスキルの中には嗅覚上昇というスキルもあった.
　セトにしてみれば、レイの様子から現在の湖や生誕の塔の周辺はかなり危険な場所であるというのは分かっている.
　だからこそ、見張りをしている途中で時々嗅覚上昇のスキルを使い、本来なら把握出来る以上の範囲から誰か近づいていないかを嗅ぎとっていた.
　セトの持つ嗅覚上昇のレベルは四だ.
　スキルの能力が爆発的に上昇する五にはまだなっていないが、それでも四ともなれば相応の効果を発揮する.
　それを知らなかったのが、男達の不運だった. ……調査不足と言ってもいい.
　もっとも、セトが嗅覚上昇などというスキルを持っているのを知っている者は少ない.
　幾ら情報収集しても、その情報を得るのは非常に難しかったが.

「さて、隠れるのは結構上手かったけど、見つかってしまえば逃げられることはないってのは分かってるな？」
「……」

　レイの言葉に、男は無言のままだ.
　実際、レイに見つかってしまった以上、ここから逃げるのが難しいのは事実なのだ. But knowing that, there is no option to fight Ray here.

　Suddenly, Seto's voice echoes around him.
　Not expecting Seto to lose to such an opponent, Ray looks at Seto with a smile and three black men on his back.
　All three were not overthrown by Seto, but by the adventurer who came back with him.
