紺色の外套に,背負ったクロスボウ型の宝具と中途半端な長さの剣の宝具.
手にはそれぞれの指に指輪型の宝具が嵌められ,それでも足りずに腰に吊るした細い鎖型宝具に何個も指輪を通し,それでも足りずに残りはベルトに引っ掛けるタイプの道具袋の中に入っていた.

指輪型の宝具って多いんだね. 人間の手の指って何で十本しかないんだろうね.

服とパンツは宝具ではなく,一般的な軽装のハンターがよく着る頑丈なものだが,それ以外はほとんど宝具である. だがそこまでやっても,何が起こるのかわからない状況に僕はゲロ吐きそうだった.

今までの経験上,凡夫が宝具で装備を固めてもろくになにもできないことがわかっていたりする.

副クランマスターの服装はいつも通り白の制服で下から上まで固められており,もう日もくれたのに微塵の隙もない.
もう夜なのにまだ仕事をしていたのか,本当に彼女は勤勉だ.

ちなみに,私室の存在は既にほぼ全員にバレているので驚いた様子はない.

エヴァはクランハウスの建設から関わっているし,ハンター達にとって隠し部屋の看破は専門みたいなものだ.

日常生活でも,天井の高さや壁までの距離から常に空白スペースがないかチェックしているらしい. 怖い.

'どうしたんですか,クライさん. そんな重装備で……'

'ふふふふふ……ちょっと散歩行ってくるよ'

'……そんなに心配なら振らなきゃいいのに'

一発でバレていた.

もうこの切羽詰まった事態に変な笑いしか出ない. エヴァが呆れたような目で僕の姿をじろじろ見る.
宝具で武装していたのがバレた理由ではないだろう. 僕はいつだって全身に宝具を仕込んでいる.

'誰か他のパーティを援軍として連れて行っては？'

エヴァが魅力的な提案をしてくれる.
が,同じクランのメンバーとは言え,彼らと僕は違うパーティだ.

こんな時間からわざわざ夜道を歩いて危険だとわかっている宝物殿まで行ってくれるようなパーティはないだろうし,あまり無茶は頼めない.

僕は呼吸を落ち着け,精一杯格好をつけた.

'問題ない. 全ては計算通りだ'

めいいっぱい強がった僕に欠片も気を払わず,エヴァが僕の方にぐいと詰め寄ってくる. その視線が,僕の首にかかっているペンダントに向いていた.
金属製のカプセルが下がったシンプルなペンダントだ. 宝具ではない.

'……それ,シトリースライムじゃないですか？'

'下手に使うと帝都が滅ぶから絶対に開けるなって言ってた――'

じっと見つめ,しかし手を伸ばそうとしないエヴァ. 危機管理がなっている.

カプセルは僕の金庫の奥底で眠っていたものである. 中には品種改良したスライムが入っているらしいが,見たことがないので知らない.

スライムは魔物の中で特別に弱い存在である. 粘体質の身体はその全身が臓器であり,柔らかいので殴っても切っても煮ても焼いても簡単に倒せる魔物だ. 様々な種類があるが,そのほとんどは取るに足らない存在である.

僕の中でもスライムは雑魚中の雑魚. いわば魔物界の僕なんだが,このカプセルにつめられているものは一味違うらしい. 何が違うのかはわからないが,そう言っているのだから違うのだろう.

宝具は強力だが,その貯蔵された魔力によって威力や使える時間が決まる.

いつも僕の宝具に魔力を込めてくれるのは『嘆きの亡霊』の後衛組だ. 前に込めてくれたのは彼らが遠征に向かう前――二週間以上前なので,魔力のほとんどは抜けてしまっているだろう. 威力は期待できない.

カプセルはいわばその代わりだった. ティノは優秀だし,絶対大丈夫だと思うし,できるだけ戦いは避けて逃げるつもりだが,いざという時のための手段を取っておくのはハンターとして当然である.

僕は用心深くハードボイルドな男なのだ.

本当は嫌だったのだが,絶対に避けたかったのだが,他の宝具ではない武器は持ち運べる大きさではなかったのでやむを得なかった.

使い方もちょっと怪しいのだが,宝物殿の中だし,ぶん投げて逃げればなんとかなるだろう. 可愛い可愛い後輩の命には代えられない.

'やだなぁ. そんな帝国法に違反している物,僕が持っているわけないじゃないか'

'……'

だが,遵法精神を尊ぶ僕と違って幼馴染達は法を破るものだと思っている節があるのであった.

なんか突っ込まれるとボロが出そうなので,さっさと執務机の後ろ,広々と取られた窓の取っ手を握り開ける. 大きく開かれた窓から予想以上に冷たく強い風が吹き込んでくる.

開閉式になっているのは開けられるようにしないとリィズが平然と割って入ってくるからだ. だが,そういう備えもこういう時は役に立つ.

エヴァが珍しく心配そうに僕を見ている. その視線はだいたいシトリースライムに向かっていた.
僕が余計なことしでかして,それがクラン運営に影響出さないか心配なのだろう.

'ほ,本当に,大丈夫ですか？'

うんうん,そうだね. ダメだね…….

僕も本当だったら誰か連れていきたいんだけど,この『夜天の暗翼』,一人用なんだ.

'あの……もう,撤退したほうがいいんじゃない？'

猛威を奮った武者は何一つその生存の証を残さずに消え去る.

ルーダが空気中に溶けて消えた狼武者の方を見ながらティノに進言した.
グレッグも散々に振るった使い込まれた長剣を下ろし,それに同意する.

'そうだな. どうせこの分じゃ,救助対象も生きちゃいねえだろう. 行くだけ無駄だ'

狼武者は強かった. 全身を覆う鎧は攻撃のほとんどを弾き,その豪腕から繰り出される斬撃はまともに受ければ致命傷は必至の威力を持っていた.

元々,獣型の『幻影(ファントム)』は素早さや力が強い傾向があるが,それに加えて武装した狼武者はとてもじゃないがレベル３の宝物殿で出るような相手ではない.

グレッグはレベル４に認定されたベテランだが,それでも一対一で戦うのは厳しい相手だ.

それでもなんとかほぼ無傷で幻影(ファントム)を倒すことができたのは,相手がはぐれでこちらに数の利があったことと,ティノが常にその武者の注意を引き,その攻撃を牽制したためである.

だが,もしも誰か一人でも途中で傷を負いその動きが鈍っていたら,戦闘はもっと長引いていただろう.

グレッグとルーダの視線に,リーダーはぴくりとも眉を動かさずに返す.

'決定は変わらない. そもそも,まだ宝物殿に入ってもいない'

'お,おいおい. 何を意固地になってる. いくらなんでも命の方が大事だろ！？ 今の奴は明らかに『白狼の巣』からやってきた連中だ,殿の中は恐らく今みたいなのがうじゃうじゃしてる'

'ついこの間来た時は普通の狼しかいなかったのに……'

ルーダが宝物殿のある方向を見て,ぶるりと肩を震わせた.
