114-Episode 11: Assassins Challenge Trial

After a few days of travel, I arrived at the royal capital.
The completely brainwashed watchdog has become my potty mouth and is giving me information that is convenient for me.
I'm not going to be able to tell you what to do. His personal belongings have been confiscated.
I had them tell me things like that.

I used it for brainwashing this time, but medicine is useful. In this world, there are plants that increase their medicinal properties by growing on magic power as food, and they can make something very powerful compared to what they were before reincarnation.
In this way, it's fine for your own use, but it's important to keep in mind that there's a risk of being used in reverse.

There are also nobles who have made a fortune from drugs.
I have accumulated the knowledge and skills that I developed in my previous life, and the knowledge of medicine in Touahade because of the family's reputation for medical science, but I won't be able to compete with the nobles who specialize in medicine.
It's no wonder that they can make something more heinous than the medicine I have.

''Well this is how we'll treat the royal capital as well, right?

In King's Landing, he is locked up in a dungeon, which may be why he talks to himself so much.
Just because I'm a suspect, this is too much, and the special treatment is because the Marquis of Karonarai has his hands around it.
His plan is to thoroughly block my eyes and ears, to frame me for a crime I don't understand, and to push through the trial with vigor.

I appreciated this kind of shrewdness.
As a matter of course, they didn't serve me a meal, so I ate the rest of the bread that was given to the tart.
As per prior information, the trial will be held tomorrow.
Now, it's time for Porgy to be on guard. At this time of day, we can slip out freely and there will be no commotion about the jail being empty.
Let's get out for a bit.
We'll get our last weapon for tomorrow's trial.

The next day, my trial will begin in the court prepared in the royal capital.
The trial is open to the public, and nobles, or those with residency status in the royal capital, can watch it from the audience seats.

Originally it was closed to the public, but it was introduced to deter the audience due to too many false accusations. A trial that was too unreasonable would cause all sorts of problems, so neither the judge nor the accuser could be reckless.
As a holy knight and having already defeated two demons, the attention of my trial is extremely high and full.
........And where did I hear it from, naturally, Nevan was there, smiling and looking at me.

'You don't seem to be worried about it. You're trusting that I can handle it. Normally, I'd be done with it the moment I'm made to stand here.''

Trials in this country are almost always a made up race.
To be fair, the trial itself cannot be held unless the court determines that there is evidence that the case is almost certainly black.

In other words, the guilt is considered to be fixed when the trial is held.
What you have to do is to read out the evidence of the side that insisted on holding this trial, confront the suspect and tell him to admit his guilt.
If he pleads guilty there, he's cleared. If he doesn't plead guilty, but the judge deems the evidence to be reasonable, he is treated as a guilty person.

The Marquis of Karonarai himself stands on the stage as the accuser and reads out the material he has made up without hesitation.

With his ample body, his face of greed and his stout manner, he is, how should I say, too stereotypically vicious and aristocratic to be funny.
I don't interrupt him in particular and wait for him to finish his story.

''From the above, it's clear that Lug Touahade abused the privileges granted to the Holy Knights and deliberately murdered Count Marlentot, who had a feud with the Baron Touahade family. It is outrageous to use the privileges given to preserve the peace of this country for personal gain. Please, I beg of you, severe punishment!

Generally speaking, their claims are the same as we've learned beforehand.
I don't have anything new to add.

"Defendant, the plea is...
'I don't remember killing Count Marrentot, and there is no such thing as a feud with Touahade. It's all a fabrication. I'm sure the evidence you gave us will be found out when we examine it.
You do not deserve this, Lugue Touahade. We have witnesses here, too. It just so happens that Count Flantrude, who was in John Bull, saw everything. I have called him here. Your Honor, permission to allow him to testify.
All right, let's allow the witness to speak.

When the judge gave his permission, Count Frantrude appeared on the stage.
He was the man I had gone to the trouble of bringing to my side, even dressed as a woman.

''I was there the day John Bull was attacked by the demons. And I happened to see the battle of the Holy Knight Lug Touahade. It was divine to watch him hunt down the demon tribe without bothering the powerful demons. It was like a legendary knight in a fairy tale, and despite the danger to my life, my feet were glued to the spot.

Oh, my goodness.
I'm not going to lie to you. It seems to be true to the point that he was watching the battle.

'Then, in the middle of the battle, he suddenly realized something and turned his attention away from the demon. There was Count Marrentot. He was sitting up, his legs knocked out in the aftermath of the battle, and at the sight of him, the rogue Touahade laughed and kicked away the debris. The debris pierced Count Marrendt's head and killed him. No doubt, that was on purpose.

Hearing his words, the audience that had come to observe began to buzz.
''No way.''
"I can't believe a holy knight would do such a thing.
"But even a holy knight is only a baronet.
It's a lively thing, such as.

Quiet!

The judge rang the gavel, there was a thunk, and silence returned.

'Are you sure about that, Count Flantrude?
Yes, I'm sure.

As he finished, the Marquis of Karonarai gave a thin smile.
He must think that this is a done deal.
 But that's too naive.
He's so preoccupied with setting me up that he's not thinking about being set up himself.
There is a continuation of Count Flantrude's words.

'No doubt, I am here because the Marquis de Caronarai threatened to tell me so. I have come here because he has made me weak, and I have come here to lay the blame on the Holy Knight. Since you would have me do this, the evidence I prepared besides my testimony would have been made up. Your Honor, I am not here to accuse the Holy Knight of being guilty, but to accuse the Marquis of Karonarai of threatening me and trying to get me to testify falsely!

The Marquis of Karonarai, who had been smiling thinly earlier, turned pale.
The murmur of the audience is even louder than before.
It seems that the Marquis Karonarai had not imagined the betrayal of Count Hrantlude at all.

It was naive of him. In fact, I even foresaw the betrayal of Count Hrantrude here, and I've prepared a plan for that eventuality.
I'm sure that many assassinations don't go according to plan. It is a professional to prepare a second or third plan at that time.
It's the mindset of an amateur to think that everything will go the way they want it to.

You're a madman!
'Which one of you is crazy! I can't believe that you're trying to bring down the Holy Knight who is risking his life to protect this country, or even this world, with your own ugly jealousy. I can't do that to you! I'll return any money you force me to give you. If you want to threaten me, you can threaten me. I've decided to follow my justice and ruin the joke of a travesty for this country!

I applaud inwardly.
 It's a compelling performance.
Completely won the audience over. I wrote the script, but it resonated more with me thanks to the good actors.
Let's put some color on the reward.

'Your Honor, this witness seems to be out of sorts. I'm going to have to overrule this witness.
'No, it does not appear to me that he is lying. If what he said is true, Marquis Karonarai, you stand here not as an accuser, but as a defendant.
'Impossible, I swear by Heaven and Earth, I have done no such thing.

Well said.
But there is no use in struggling anymore.
The tide is now turning in our direction. I think it's time to finish it.

"Your Honor, I'd like to respond. I've prepared a briefing paper on your case, Your Honour. I've written down the evidence of the Marquis of Karonarai's unjustified attempt to humiliate me. First of all, please see the summary of the case.

The amount of evidence I've gathered is enormous, and it would take a lot of time to go through it all.
So I made a short summary and then a separate detailed summary of the supplementary material.

His assistant, under the judge's direction, will take the material from me and carry it to him.
The Marquis of Karonarai says with a look on his face that it is impossible.
At any rate, I've been instructed to confiscate all my personal belongings, and I plan to seize any such material.
I'm sure I was brought here in the first place without knowing what I was doing, and I don't think I had time to take any precautions.

'To my surprise,' said the Marquis of Karonarai, 'it was not in John Bull that Count Marrentot was murdered, but here in King's Landing, and the Marquis of Karonarai arranged for the body to be transported. Not only that, but the feud between Touahade and the Count of Marrentot is a fabrication; rather, it is the Marquis of Karonarai who is hostile to the Count of Marrentot... an interesting document.
You made that stuff up!
Maybe. But this document is far more persuasive than the one you've provided. And I'm sure we can corroborate it with our own documents. At the very least, I would not condemn Lugues Touahade in this forum. After all, your witness was the only one who saw the murder. Now that he has recanted his previous statement, no one else saw the murder of Count Marlentot at John Bull.
It is, but I have circumstantial evidence!
The circumstantial evidence suggests that the Marquis of Karonarai is more suspicious than Lugues Touahade. Marquis Karonarai, you know what will happen if, in the unlikely event that the material that Lugue Touahade has provided is corroborated, don't you?

Perjury in a trial is an extremely serious crime.
That crime alone would determine the demolition of the house, and it would also force him to perform inhumane service to the national interest as only a nobleman can. That's a tough one.
And moreover, since he interfered with a holy knight who was on a mission to save the country with a personal grudge, his crime was increased.
The crime of killing a nobleman would be added to that. The Marquis of Karonarai would be doomed.

''I'm innocent! You'd rather believe a mere baronet, such a brat, than me, the head of the honorable Marquis of Karonarai!

The bottom line is shallow.
Just what he just said reveals his hostility towards me, his personal feelings.
It makes my heart worse, and makes the audience hostile as well. ........This guy could be framed. It's enough to make you think so.
The judge felt the same way, and his eyes narrowed.

''Yes, if you ask me which one I would believe, it would be him. He fought off the demons twice at the risk of his life. If we talk about achievements alone, he is the hope of this country, which surpasses even the brave men. ......I've come to a conclusion. Rougu Touahade is innocent. And based on the materials brought to us by him, we will investigate the Marquis of Karonarai and, depending on the circumstances, we will hold a trial to charge the Marquis of Karonarai. In addition, since there is a high probability that the Marquis of Karonarai will be defensive and may destroy evidence or flee, I will order that he be held by the presiding judge until the investigation is completed.

The door behind the judge opens and the knights appear, restraining the Marquis of Karonarai.

'Don't be silly, I'm a Marquis, I'm a Karonarai, why can't you listen to my orders, I'm

When I'm taken away, he walks past me.
At that moment, I use wind magic.
A magic that carries sound on the wind. With this, you can only make your voice reach the people you want to reach.

''Don't think this is going to be enough. I've ransacked the house while you were gone. It sounds like you've been doing some very nasty things. I'm going to drag him out into the open and stifle him once and for all. And it's not just you. It's your people too. You'll spend the rest of your life in prison for messing with me.

It's not just my voice that I put to the wind, it's my killing intent.
I'm skilled at putting emotion in my voice.
A stain forms on the Marquis of Karonarai's pants.
Someone in the audience notices it, and the blabbering spreads, and finally, pointing to it, a whirlwind of laughter spreads.

The Marquis de Caronarai's face turns red and he trembles with humiliation.
For his pride, there is no greater humiliation than this.
He can't save himself from ruining himself with the intention of hurting the cocky baron's late son and lowering his pent-up humiliation.

''Lug Touahade, I am sorry for this time. Once again, as soon as we have corroborated your materials, we will pay compensation after confiscating the Marquis Karonarai's private property in accordance with the regulations.
No, thank you for believing us.

I'm glad he's a calm judge.
The biggest thing I was afraid of was a case where the judge himself was bought off.
It would have been a tough fight if they had used that move.

I just didn't think it was possible. At any rate, it would be a felony the moment he approached them with the story.

A move that is too risky.
But if I'm going to set someone up the way the Marquis of Caronarae did, that's as far as I'll go.
With all possible means of persuasion, it's difficult but possible.
After all, he's lost because he's not much more than a scoundrel in every move he's made.
You're not prepared enough to pick a fight with me.

I've got a souvenir, so let's have some fun.

I snuck out of my cell yesterday in order to break into his compound, find a weakness that could destroy him, and use it as insurance.
Even if we were about to lose the trial, we were able to stretch him as far as we could, and we were able to threaten him into withdrawing from the trial itself.
In addition, I also received this fee.
He's a connoisseur, just like he swindled the Count of Flandrud out of his art collection, and he knows what he's doing with his priceless artifacts. I scoured his mansion in the hope of finding something interesting.
That reading was correct. There was a divine artifact that hadn't even been caught in our information network.
This is the second sacred artifact I have in hand. We'll be able to reveal the mechanisms that we couldn't figure out with [Crane Skin Pouch] alone, and we can also expect the performance of that itself.
Considering the fact that we've obtained all this stuff, the time and effort we've been forced to put in these past few days is worth it.
So, I'll forgive him with an open mind.
I don't want to get involved with him anymore.
But he will be judged by the law without my having to deal with it any longer.
Let's hope he does right by me. ...and at the end of his life he'll probably end up dead or dead before he can pay for his sins, but that's not my problem.
After a few days of travel, I arrived at the royal capital.
