198 . Greed House and Free House, Part 7

The Greed family was stripped of its status as the Fourth Duke and demoted.

When I heard the news from Foldente, who had returned from King's Landing, I had a somewhat cold feeling.

The former head of the family and former father, Gapoli, who was so obsessed with money that he kept squeezing as much as he could out of his direct control.
An aristocratic family that continues to do so cannot continue to prosper forever.
It is because I thought so that I admonished my former father, but as a result I was disowned and driven out of the family home.

That's probably why, when I heard this news, I still had a feeling somewhere in my heart
Oh, I knew it.
I couldn't have any more feelings than that, and...

I have no desire to save the Greed family.
 In a way, I think it's a situation that was inevitable.....and self-inflicted.
That's why I hope that they will take this matter to heart and rebuild the house by making improvements and reforms.

However, I'm hoping to do something about the former people of the immediate area who are lost in the streets because of this agitation.
The bad guy is the Greed family, and the people under their jurisdiction are not to blame for anything.

I've decided to ask Foldente to check on the condition of all the people of the former direct control area who have been scattered in exile.
If they seemed to have a destination in mind, I asked them to leave them alone, and if there was a group of people who didn't have a destination in mind, I asked them to direct them to the frontier city of Liberty Combe.

I am very aware that they are sycophants.
However, as a former member of the Greed family, this is quite a large part of my own bullying or atonement to my people for not being able to stop my former father's outburst.

◇ ◇ ◇.

Within a few days, quite a few people came to the frontier city of Liberty Combe, accompanied by Foldente.
As expected, or rather........it seems that everyone who had been driven out of their immediate area of jurisdiction were wandering around the mountains and fields, camping out in the open with nowhere to go.

I welcomed these people into the public housing on the street behind the town hall.
This public housing complex had been built on a fairly large scale, so it was able to take in the people that Foldente brought in this time with plenty of room to spare.
The plan is to find work for these people as soon as their lives are settled.
There are job offers in the large cultivation areas and the central wholesale market that are developing in the south, so we will try to introduce them there first.

Not a few of the people of the ex-directorate who had been turned into exiles remembered me.
They remembered me as the person who greeted everyone without magically changing my appearance.
'So it's that old Saffate girl who's been giving you a hand...'
Everyone was surprised at first and then expressed their gratitude.

I was told that I was regarded as a hero by the people under my jurisdiction...
The reason is that the people under his jurisdiction who admonished his former father and heard him disowned as a result of his admonition are
Safate Botan was disowned and kicked out of the house for admonishing Master Gapoli for our sake.
Little Safate was the only one on our side.
He said he kept thinking that.

'Anyway, here in the frontier city of Liberty Combe, I promise not to make you feel like you did when you were under direct control. You can live in peace.
When I said that, they all burst into tears and were happy to see me.

Erdena walked over to my side, staring at the people who were moving into the city while being guided by the guards.

Then Eldena gently placed her hand on my shoulder.
I nodded widely to Eldena like that.

◇ ◇ ◇.

 Another week passed.
Word came to the Greed family that a team of inspectors from King's Landing was investigating.

Quinn of the Quinn Chamber of Commerce, who had come from King's Landing, told me that
'Whatever it is, it's apparently an investigation into the relationship between the dark winsomeness and the exorbitant taxes imposed on the land directly under his control.
It was a matter of time.
However, since it's my ex-father, I'm sure he's already disposed of the materials that could be suspected to be related to the dark winning voice.
If it was that ex-father, it would be a piece of cake.
However, that's not going to happen when it comes to the case that he's been skimming off the land under his direct control.
No matter how much they falsified or disposed of the documents, if the remaining people under their jurisdiction are interviewed, the rags will surely be revealed.
If it was the Greed family in the past, they could have put pressure on the inspection team's dispatchers not to carry out the hearings by attacking them with slush funds, but the Greed family, which is rumored to have already been ousted from the position of the four lords and is financially strapped, seems to have no way to do anything about it.

Sure enough, an interview was also conducted with the land directly under their control.

Within a week after such an inspection was completed, the punishment against the Greed family was announced in the royal capital.
The Greed family, who had been stripped of their status as four dukes and demoted to a higher nobility, was reduced to a lower nobility in one fell swoop.
Among the conditions of the promotion was the rebuilding of the lands directly under their control that they still owned today.
As for the connection with the dark charmers, seeing that the case had been treated as an indictment due to lack of evidence, it was still likely that his former father had carefully disposed of the relevant documents.
Although the Greed family has somehow managed to get away with their relationship with the underworld, apparently there are few people in King's Landing who believe in their innocence.
It is said that until now, the Greed family has been influential not only in the aristocratic society, but also in the political world of the capital, which is why a variety of rumors that have not been exposed to the public are now beginning to spew out on their own.

In a sense, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the Greed family has come to an end.

◇ ◇ ◇ ◇.

A few more days later, I heard that my former sister Tamar, who had married into another noble family, had been separated and sent back to the Greed family.
The next day, we also received word that the noble family to which his former sister, Causey, was married had unilaterally declared a break with the Greed family.

Apparently Tamar's relationship with her mother-in-law had deteriorated beyond repair because of her profligate spending habits, and with the Greed family being demoted, it should have been only a matter of time before this happened.
Although Causey and his wife have been making a lot of mistresses together, that seems to be how they got along, and that's why they took this step.........

In addition, an investigation into allegations of bribery while serving in the military has also been launched into his ex-brother Prideaux, who took over his family's house.
Apparently, if he is found to have taken bribes, he could be stripped of his generalship at worst, and if that happens, he will be ordered to return the remuneration paid to him during his time as a general.

Who would have thought that the Greed family, which boasted so much prosperity, would have come to this point in just a few weeks.......

◇ ◇.

Amidst the daily flow of negative information about the Greed family, a messenger arrived from the frontier city of Greencomb.
''I wonder what happened all of a sudden with no prior notice.
I nodded my head and moved to the reception room to meet those messengers.
