98 Episode 98: Good Advance II

Ten days after the resolution, the combined Rosais and Equus forces led by Bartolo arrived in King Domorgal's country.

The Braus territory is on the border of King Losais' country and King Domorgal's country.
However, that territory has been greatly reduced now.......but even so, that territory is still very large.

Bartolo asked Lettice as soon as he arrived.
''What's the status of the battle?''
'It's not much different from the situation I told you about yesterday. We have 8,000 forces. The enemy force is about 22,000. Our largest force is led by General Tonino, who is at 6,000. The enemy's maximum force is led by Prince Aldo, 15,000. The others are dispersed in small numbers in various parts of the country.
 I see...

It will be in the form of Prince Aldo's 15,000 to General Tonino's 6,000 to Prince Aldo's 15,000.
 The question is.....

How long do you think General Tonino will last?
'General Tonino is taking advantage of the terrain and lowering the lines a little bit, adopting ambush and scorched earth tactics. Perhaps a week is the limit.

The tactics that Tonino employs are similar to what is known as guerrilla tactics.
He sends a small group of troops into the woods or behind rocks and attacks sporadically. He burns down villages on the enemy's route of advance and throws poison and filth into wells.

Prince Aldo, unfamiliar with the war, is taking a lot of trouble.

'So let's head to General Tonino's rescue as soon as possible, shall we?
'What? But there's a great Aldo family fiefdom to the east. Are you sure? First the gloom behind you....
 No problem.

Bartolo interrupted Lettice's words. Then he smiled and explained.

'I'm a former Paxian over there. I'll turn over to you this way depending on the battle situation.'
 Is that...?
Yes, sir. 'For now, turn eastward with the forces of the House of Braus. As soon as you're stranded, we'll rescue General Tonino. I wouldn't say we're in harmony.

Bartolo implicitly informs him that he's a liability, so he has to pull back.
Lettis gives him a complicated look.

It's fine that his own troops won't be reduced, but not being able to make any military gains at all is a frustration.
But without the assistance of Rosais' army, the defeat of the Carlo faction is obvious.

''I understand. ...Take my brother Rene with you. He has memorized the geography.

Rene Blouse was under house arrest in a remote area for the crime of having caused the city to open up bloodlessly.
But King Domorgal, who had ordered his house arrest, had also died, so he had returned. Or rather, now was not the time to be quietly under house arrest.

'Thank you. After all, I'm not very familiar with the geography of this country. It helps.''
 Bartolo thanked him.
Gaining ground is a very important thing in war.

It also has a great impact on the speed of your march.

'Then I say that goodness must come in a hurry. I'll be there as soon as I can.'

 Bartolo left the scene early.
Along with eight thousand and eight hundred troops........

'Tonino! Rejoice. Help is on the way. Eight thousand and eight hundred men. They're going to arrive in the morning!

 Tonino's shoulders slumped.
Carlo tapped him on the shoulder.

'Well, well, it's better than dying, isn't it?'
I thought you might like to be a little more depressed, sir.

Tonino & Carlo's army was located about ten kilometers from the border of the Heavenly Domain.
The troops directly commanded by the two men are about 3,000.

The remaining three thousand were dispersed to various locations, forcing them to repeat sporadic attacks.
Although the dispersion of forces is not a very laudable strategy.......from the enemy's fifteen thousand, six thousand and three thousand are not that different.

Sometimes it's better to spread out your forces.

"Aldo's guy must be pretty pissed off. He's having a temper tantrum.
Ha, it's easy to imagine. Maybe he's taking it out on the vassals?

 They laughed happily.
The fact that reinforcements were coming made them feel lighter.

'Report from Troop 3! The surprise attack succeeded in causing damage to the enemy's Transportation Corps! They've destroyed three wagons! The damage here is seventy! It's slight!
Thank you. And tell the rest of the troops. There are reinforcements coming in. So this long, long endurance battle is over. Join us.

After receiving a word from Tonino, Hayama straddled his horse again and galloped away.
Tonino watched his back to the end.

''Ah! You're kidding me! What the hell!
At any rate, I can't answer your question unless you tell me what you're angry about. Also, it hurts.

Aldo calmed down by punching Alice in the face for a while, and then he moved away from Alice's body.
Then he sat down on a chair and yelled at her while lifting his eyes.

'Those bastards! Stop, stop, stop! It's like the Transportation Corps is all about the Transportation Corps!
Then why not just march in to protect the Transportation Corps?

Alice doesn't understand the Art of War. Or rather, how can she understand it when she can't even read?
But if the Transportation Corps is being targeted, wouldn't it be normal to march in to protect it?

'That would slow down the already slow march even more! Okay? The sooner the troops are ready, the better.
 Well, this is educational.

In the meantime, Alice will give her a counterpart.
Alice has no idea if what Aldo is saying is right or wrong.

 ''You utterly cowards........''
 ....

 You tell me. It.

Alice stifles the words that were about to leak out with her hands.
If you say this, it won't be enough to just get beaten up.

Well, since the perpetrator is Alice, Alice isn't in a position to say anything about others either.

''Aldo-sama! It appears that King Rosais's country has raised an army! They are expected to join the enemy forces tomorrow morning!
'What? That bastard you think you can bring another country's army into a civil war! Oh! Because you guys are goofing off and marching!
 I'm sorry!

The innocent, innocent messenger is pissed off.
Naturally, the job of the messenger is to get information into Aldo's ears, not to command the troops.

The reason why the march is delayed is because Aldo's command is poor.
Ninety percent bad is Aldo, and ten percent bad is a great tribe that cannot oppose Aldo at all.

'It is good, isn't it? You are going to join the enemy, right? It's tricky, but if you break through on it, you win. It will change this somber warfare situation in a heartbeat.

The message is pitiful, so Alice offers to help.
A pinch is a chance theory.

''I wanted to decide the game before we joined up!

Aldo throws a kick at Alice.
 Alice takes it head on.

She takes a passive action so that Aldo can't see it and misses the damage.
Aldo gets pissed off when she takes the passive action so blatantly.

He makes it look like he took a decent bite, but it's actually not that much damage...
Sometimes it's one of Alice's specialties.

 "Hey!
 Yes, yes!

Denrei's body shakes with a jolt.
Aldo stamps on Alice's face as he asks the messenger.

''How many Rosais' army is there?''
 About 9,000 to 7,000.
"Will there be as many of us as there will be of my army...

At present, the enemy general, General Tonino, leads a force of about six thousand.
If Rosais' army joined them, they would be almost as strong as their own.

If it becomes a battle between two equal numbers, it will be a pure contest between the strength of the troops and the ability of the commander.

 ''Okay, we've won.''
 ....

Isn't it the other way around?

Alice hurriedly blocked her true feelings that were about to fly out of her mouth with her hands and swallowed.

 The quicksilver would kill her.

'Lord Bartolo! Thank you for coming!
'Our friend, King Domorgal, is in danger. It is only natural. Together we will defeat the enemy!

 Bartolo greets King Domorgal (Carlo).
Carlo also welcomes Bartolo politely. If Bartolo leaves with his navel bent, Carlo's head will fly off.

Bartolo turns to face Tonino, who was standing to Carlo's right.

'Long time no see. General Tonino. It's been a year, hasn't it?'
'Oh it's been a long time. ....When I first met you, I didn't think for a minute that this would happen...

Tonino chuckles and squeezes Bartolo's hand.
They shake each other's hands passionately.

''Well, let's get right to the military discussion. Where is the enemy now?'
'We are camped about three hours from here. There are about 15,000 of them. About the same number as ours.
An equal number ... then we'll have to fight in the field.

 Bartolo and Tonino grin.
Both of them were good enough to be considered great generals. It was unthinkable that they would lose to a fifteen year old youngster in a battle between an equal number of people.

Thus, we move on to talking about how much we can reduce our sacrifices to win, rather than how to win.

'I thought Prince Aldo was quite annoyed by my harassment. With his character, he will certainly challenge me to a field battle.'
'That's easier said than done. It's a pain in the ass to lure the snails out.

If this had been a coward like Carlo, he would have retreated to the camp and not come out.
If that happened, it would be untouchable.

The law of three times the attack. It's more advantageous to stay in your shell.

''If King Carlo is good enough to be the commander-in-chief (for the sake of construction) what about the chain of command? Do you want to unify over there?
I'll follow Master Bartolo. You have more men than I do.

 The story goes on easily.
It's no surprise that Rosais's army has the advantage on the side that is helping them.

A military council is recommended, led by Bartolo.
Carlo is out of the mosquito net. He's getting lonely, playing with pebbles with his feet.

'This is an unusual formation. Is it operational?
It's never been tried before with 10,000 fighting each other. This is the first time our country has ever had a battle between 10,000 people but it's been tried and tested on a small scale. So help me out.

I notice that there is no more respectful language between the two sides. They happily proceed with their military discussions.
Carlo is a mosquito net (below).

''The problem is the four hundred cavalry that Prince Aldo has. Probably the textbook arrangement on both sides, but you'll have six hundred cavalry on your left, and two hundred on Carlo's army. And the other two hundred are Carlo's army), right? What about the defense on the right?
You'll take the right flank and lead them directly. "You'll be on the right side, and you'll be in direct command. I'm sure you'll be able to find a way to make it work. All the light infantry with explosive spears will go to that side.

An explosive spear is a great anti-cavalry weapon.
Even if it doesn't hit, the horse is surprised by the sound of the blast.

The cavalry is strong in the assault with the helpers adding speed.
With an exploding spear, they can stop that charge once. Cavalry that have stopped moving are not the enemy.

"Just give me the bombed spear, okay?
No, it's not easy to use. Don't worry, we'll send our own troops around.

If it is stolen and copied poorly, it will be a disaster.
However, it would be nearly impossible to produce black powder, let alone decipher the magic formula of the Tetra, the ignition device.

"Then let's make sure we win tomorrow's battle.
Yeah. We'll have a drink afterwards.

Bartolo and Tonino shook hands passionately and embraced each other.
 Carlo (below).
