264 Chapter 264: Cavalry

A few issues were found in this war.

One, the defense of Roselle's kingdom was even more solid than I had imagined.
Even if they were defeated in a battle, if they were holed up in a city, there was nothing they could do.

After all, it would be difficult to capture Roselle's kingdom unless the local Adelnians aimed for an uprising and wreaked havoc.
In addition, we need to prepare a full complement of siege weapons.

Two, we don't have enough cavalry.
 That's also overwhelmingly insufficient.

Or rather, there are too many cavalry in the Roselle Kingdom!

''But we can't add cavalry to the Kingsguard that easily, can we? Brother......
 Yeah.

 Rosward cowers his shoulders.
I'm well aware that Rosward has been diligent in training the cavalry, too.

Thanks to that, I'm not as good as the Alva cavalry, but....
The Adelunian cavalry is also at a reasonable level to fight.

 But they are vastly insufficient.
We must have both the skill level and the numbers, or both.

''With that said, I'd like to borrow your wisdom, but can't we somehow get our cavalry in place?

I ask Ron, Rosward, Gram, Bartolo, Alexios, Ial and Raimondo, gathered in a room in the royal castle.
But the answer is not so easy to give.

Or rather, if I get it, it won't be hard to get it.

'Leader, is it impossible to get more Alva cavalry?
The Kingdom of Alva has a small population and we can't afford to rely on Muzio for everything.

It is not an exaggeration to say that we still rely too much on them.
After all, we must secure some cavalry on our own.

''What about drawing cavalry from our allies in the Federation? King Fardham's country and King Domorgal's country had a certain amount of cavalry to counter the cavalry of Roselle's kingdom, didn't they?

Gram suddenly suggested as if he had an idea.
It was true that the cavalry in that area was not strong but they had some useful cavalry.

As a result of the last war, many warriors had lost their jobs in Fardham, Domorgal, and Gilbed.
'Hiring them back,' he said, 'is not a bad idea.

'But even including them wouldn't be enough, would it?

The cavalry of the Kingdom of Roselle is about 50,000 men.
Maybe we can raise a hundred thousand.

That's about the size of our country...
'I'm not saying that, but we need some cavalry.

'The easiest thing to do is to hire mercenaries. ''Your Majesty. Even in our country, it is common for cavalry to hire nomads as mercenaries.''
Well, a mercenary you can't just turn your back on them.

I don't have a good feeling about these mercenaries.
But since there's no alternative, there's no other way to go about it.

Well, mercenaries have the advantage of being useless, and even if they die, it doesn't hurt.
It's not as bad as they say.

And Alvah's cavalrymen are mercenaries in a way.

'Where did they get their cavalry from in Pofenia?
That depends on the general, but basically, the cavalry comes from a certain place.
 What's that?
 Gallia, Germanis, and Nudia.

Gaul I don't have to tell you.
 Our enemy, the Roselle Kingdom.

Well, Gallia is a large place, and in fact, the Roselle Kingdom controls only about a third of the Gallia at best.
They're probably recruiting cavalry from the other tribes.

 I know Germanis well, too.
It's where Alice, Nia, and Rosward's second-in-command, Villegal, came from.

And the reason I bought the slave, Villegal, was because I wanted cavalry.

It seems that there is a lot of contact with horse nomads there, so it would be easy to raise a cavalryman.

 And Nudia........
 I've never heard of them.

'The Hanno family has connections in Gaul, so they use Gallic cavalry a lot. Conversely, the Barca family has connections to Nudia, so they often use the Nudia cavalry.
 What's this Nudia thing?
It's a nomadic nation, next to Pofenia. It is no less powerful than the Alva Cavalry.

 It's also....
I guess I'll have to be careful with the Pophenian cavalry.

'Alexios, which cavalry do you think is better for you?'
'I would not recommend Nudia. It is next to Pofenia and the growing rapport between our country and Nudia will cause Pofenia to be wary and repulsive. .... unless you want to fight Pofenia.

No, I'm not going to fight.
Heavy infantry is useless at sea.

''I'm afraid Galia isn't bad. Clans that are hostile to the Kingdom of Roselle would be easy to hire but those clans are deep in Gaul. They'll be hard to contact. Even if you can, it will take time to build up trust.

There's a lot of forest in Gaul...
Just sending out a delegation is a hassle.

So the last thing you want to do is....

 Germanic cavalry.
I think it's for the best. It's a good thing, right?

I had an image in my mind of Adalbero, the chief of the Swevi.
He was truly a savage but that doesn't mean he couldn't be trusted.

He would be excellent in military prowess as well.

 "What do you think, Bartolo?
What do you think? I've never used Germanis cavalry, so I don't know. Well, the Alliance guys are like mercenaries, too, so I don't think there's much difference... but it's a bit of a hassle not being able to speak the language.
 That's not Roseward, okay? Right?
Yes, I speak some Germanic languages.

 Rosward replies confidently.
After all, Rosward's wife, Nia, is Germanic.

'Well, we'll have to try her once. The cavalry.
Yeah. If it doesn't work, we'll have to rethink it.

However, I'll have to send a letter first.

Then I sent a letter of intent to Adalbero of the Swevi tribe.
The letter was received safely, and I received a reply two weeks later.

The letter said that the Swevi tribe alone would not be able to gather enough cavalry to satisfy Romalia.
But there are many Germanis who are being boiled by the kingdom of Roselle.

If we recruit them, we can prepare tens of thousands of cavalry.
It was a matter of course.

As expected, we don't need tens of thousands, but.....
I'd like to conduct an exercise once and I'd like you to collect about a thousand.
We will pay you and we will provide you with food.

I will pay you and provide you with food.

A few months later, a thousand Germanic cavalrymen gathered in the Kingdom of Romalia.

 Germanic cavalry.........
It was somewhat of an appearance of THE barbarian.

He was only naked on his upper body, wearing a fur cloak.
And on his head was a horned helmet.

A single spear in his hand.

But to see him riding a horse without stirrups.....

It seems that he is an excellent cavalryman, after all.

 "Hey, Roseward. How's it going?
Hmmm, I'll have to try that one.

And so on, but Rosward looks confident.

'Well, give it a try, then.'
 Yes, Your Majesty. Your Majesty.

Rosward was still able to say that he was as good as he could be.
First of all, he picked ten Germanis cavalrymen who were cocky and told them to go hang with the ten, and if they won, he would give them ten times their contract and they could leave.

The opponents were Adelnians who were not very good at riding horses.
 And they're smaller than us.

And there is a difference in numbers.

The ten Germanis horsemen, spears in hand, attacked Rosward, kicking his horse in the gut.

Rosward battered them in an instant.

Rosward has been compensated for his physical abilities with the 'Great King's Blessing'.
On top of that, he has fought as a cavalryman for a long time.

His abilities are superior to even Alva cavalrymen.

Thus, after being shown their abilities, Germanic cavalrymen became obedient as if their previous attitude was a lie.
After all, it seems to be a culture that follows the strong, like the barbarians.

After that, Germanic cavalrymen's movements were amazing.
Although not as good as the Arva cavalry, they handled their horses with such skill that they could not be compared to the Adelunian cavalry.

In particular, his skill in charging without stirrups, supporting his body with only the muscles of his legs and with a spear in one hand, was amazing.
He is not skilled in cavalry firing, but his cavalry charge is remarkable.

It's a good thing Rosward's command was good, or he would have followed orders properly.
 That was passable enough.

And after a few weeks of exercises, and after returning the Germanic cavalry, I sent Adalbero a letter of intent.

I may hire you again when war breaks out.
 Good luck in that case.

 Well.....
A new mercenary of Germanic cavalry that you have decided to hire.
Will this prove to be good or bad?

I'm hoping it will be good luck, if possible.

Otherwise, we won't be able to compete with the cavalry of the Roselle Kingdom.

 .........
 .........

It's not a good idea to rely on Germanic cavalry alone, and I'll try to contact the Gallic cavalry as well.
It would be worth it to the extent of sending a messenger.

As for the Nudia cavalry, I'll have them introduce me to them through Hanno.
I don't know if they'll tell us, though.
