28 CHAPTER XXVIII SECRET WEapons

"Get out the pitchforks!

Following Letty's orders, her direct troops move a large wooden mechanism on the city wall.
The mechanism was shaped like a tower, with a large wooden stick standing at an angle at its top. One side of the stick was against the ground, and an indentation was dug into the top of the stick like a spoon.
On the other side, somehow, there were several strings hanging down.
The soldiers put the bags in the indent at the edge of the tree on the ground, and right below the string on the other side stand the demons of the rise.
All of them are bipedal or quadrupedal demons that can use their hands, and their appearance is unflattering and heavy.

Fire!

When Letty shouted, the monsters all jumped at once and grabbed the cord.
The height of the string is just barely enough for the heavy monsters to reach it, so the center of gravity of the mechanism is naturally biased in the direction the monsters jumped to.
Then the wooden stick to which the cord was tied tilts and falls down around the center like a seesaw.
The demon falls toward the ground holding the cord, and as soon as the tip of the stick hits the ground, the sack on the opposite side of the ditch flies out with great force.
When the flying bag lands on the enemy's side, the impact rips the bag open, and some kind of powder is billowing out from inside.

And as the demons breathed in the powder, the scene of the battlefield changed.
The demons, who until now had been advancing in search of food with the reasoning of a beast, suddenly began to recklessly rampage.
The demons that attacked them ignored the demons in front of them and bit another demon, and a chain of conflicts ensued one after another.

Oh, it's working! The demons have started fighting each other!

The adventurers cheered as they reported from the watchtower.

"I knew Matango spores would work!

"It's annoying to be on the receiving end!

The adventurers are laughing happily as they see the demons starting to fight each other.
The reason why the demons started fighting each other is because of the demon spore called matango used by Lasse.
Matango spores have an extremely powerful hallucinogenic effect.
Lasse and the others used this effect to vie with the demons.
When the demons came looking for food, they would see their friends as food through the effect of the matango spores.
And the adventurers who saw the scene will laugh as they remember the pain they also suffered from matango.
Although not relevant here, there are various illegal medicines that use this powder.

Fire the second shot with the pitchfork!

At Letty's command, the slingshot was reloaded.
But this time it was ordinary rock that was being consulted.
Matangoes are living creatures and there were limits to the amount of powder they could produce.
And as a projectile, this is where the real work begins.

Fire!

Following Letty's instructions, the rock is released again and again.
Rocks released from a distance are not only powerful mass weapons, but also become obstacles after they land.
The obstacle blocks the enemy's progress. If you continue firing in the same direction, the obstacles will gradually pile up, making it extremely difficult to attack from that direction.
The second stage of this strategy was to create a simple, low wall made of dead monsters and rocks from stone throwers.

The enemy is further dispersed!

The demons will bypass the newly built simple castle wall and come toward you further.
Now that the demons are getting so close, the archers can't keep up with them.

Forward with spear squad and demon squad!

Following Trow's instructions, the skilled adventurers, who were waiting just below the city walls, dropped their bows and readied their spears.

Charge!

As the adventurers charged at the monsters at the front lines, they also noticed the adventurers and screamed.
And as they were about to charge at them, they noticed something strange about themselves.
 Their feet don't move.
Their feet were stuck to vines, ivy, and tree roots that grew from the ground and made it impossible for them to walk.
The demons were baffled by the mysterious situation.

It's not a problem.

Then the adventurers with their long spears ready to attack.
I'm sure the demons can't avoid it, but they tried to counterattack, but their claws couldn't even reach the range of the long spear. The spear attacked them one-sidedly.
And in the blink of an eye, the demons were annihilated.
For the adventurers who have been fighting demons on a daily basis, the battle against motionless demons was like twisting a baby's hand.
Then the adventurers attacked the next demon.
The demons, too, were suddenly paralyzed by ivy that got tangled underfoot and were cut down by the adventurers.

"This is going well.

"Aww.

Suddenly I hear voices in the trees nearby.
Yes, the dryads and Trent, Lasse's followers.
Armed with the power to control the trees, they ordered their followers to stop the demons.
Rather than using it to attack, they simply entwined it with their legs to block their opponent's movements, and the simple manipulation of the plant was surprisingly effective.
For the average adventurer, it would only slow them down, but for the skilled adventurer, even the smallest of gaps could turn into a huge opportunity.
Their inconspicuous support greatly reduced the number of enemies on the front lines.

"I wish I could play with more panache.

And the dryad, hiding in the trees for cover, blurts out.

"Too bad.

''I know. Our concealment abilities are effective even against demons, and the master has decided that it is dangerous to let us demons play an all-out role in this battle, so he's just going to cover for us.

In fact, the demons of Lasse are often invisible, covering and bombing.
This is because they don't want to play too prominent a role in the battlefield, giving the townspeople and adventurers the potential for fear if Lasse and the others turned against them.

That's why Lasse has decided to support the demons and stop thinking that they are useful.
Of course, Trow and other experienced executives understood the usefulness of Lasse and his team, and recognized the importance of maintaining a friendly relationship with them.

And these two weren't the only demons to support them.
A wolf's yell rises from within the demons.
 A werewolf's scream.
They decided they couldn't get food by attacking with a group.
That's why they chose to discard the other slow demons and enter the enemy camp alone, specializing in speed to secure their prey.

This was different from the demons that had attacked us without thinking, and they used their wits.

Their fellow wolves will run ahead of them.
The werewolves are with the wolves.
Smaller wolves will attack the enemy, stopping their prey with their small, swiftly turning bodies and being stopped by the werewolf who comes from behind.
The wolves attacked the adventurers to take advantage of their tactics.
Instead of dodging the fence, the wolves will slip through the gap underneath it.
Then the wolf's flesh rolls to the ground with great force.
The werewolves couldn't understand what had happened.
But after a few moments, they finally realize that their friends have been killed.
They were bewildered. They had just stepped under the fence and now the wolves had shredded them into little pieces!

What the hell happened? If you had carefully examined the fence to find out, you would have noticed that there were many layers of thin thread stretched across it.
This thread is the thread of the blade strung by Lasse's servant Arachne, the slashing thread.
Arachne can spit out multiple threads from the tip of her tail.
One of them was the spinneret, which caused its prey to injure itself when it tried to escape from the trap.
By nature, a zangspin is not so scary.
It was intended to cause the prey to slowly and painlessly bleed to death as it tried to escape, or to force the wise prey to spend more time carefully shedding the thread to escape.
The wolves were unfortunate that they did not go around the fence in favor of speed.
They dove through the fence without killing their speed to hunt their prey quickly, and then they rushed toward the invisible knives.
 Like Tokoroten.
As a result, the wolves were killed by their own speed.

And that wasn't the only misfortune.
The wolves decided to jump under the fence because it was too dangerous.
If the bottom was no good, then the top was no trap.
With their own leaping ability, they could easily jump over the fence.
As a result, they fell into a trap at the top of the fence.
into an acid pit where slime lurks in abundance.
The werewolves who fell into the pit leaped to crawl out of it, but those who lost their balance and fell into the pit unexpectedly lost their balance and overturned, and those who were lucky enough to land had both legs torn apart by the acid.
Speed was their strength, but the intense pain in their legs brought on by the acid made them unable to move, and they were quickly decimated by adventurers who took advantage of the gap.

Because of their half-wittedness, the werewolves were defeated.

"There's movement backwards! It seems to be the boss of the herd!

The report from the watchtower causes a stir among the vigilantes.

"There you are!

Trow got up from his chair and stared at the bottom of the demons.

There was the shadow of a monster that was clearly different in size.

The biggest one in the group, I'm sure of it, is the boss of the pack!

Here the battle was about to be fought out.
