53-Episode 52: Desert Elf Common Sense

I'm Chief Bittershall of the Giraffe clan.

This is my wife, Kushana.

The next day, this time we were led to the mobile city of the Giraffe tribe.
We landed by boat and were led to the chief's residence, where we were greeted by the chief and his wife.
The chief is probably in his late twenties.
As he was an elf, he was quite handsome, though his lines were thin.
His wife is also beautiful, but in this world, she is treated as a skank.

'I'm Katoo, Chief of the Gorilla tribe.

You really are human.

Yeah, well.

No offense to the Chief, but I was the first human to reactivate a mobile city.
It must be a rare occurrence.

''But I'm convinced. You're a 'changer', aren't you?

You know exactly what I mean.

It's fine to deny it here, but if you suddenly lie, you might lose their trust.
Besides, no matter what I think, the relationship between the Bart Kingdom and the desert elves should not be good.
Thinking it was unlikely that they would sell me, I honestly told them that I was a 'change agent'.

''You don't hide it?''

'There is no point in hiding it, shall we say? Does the Chief intend to sell me to the Kingdom of Bart? To buy the new king's pleasure.

No, that new king is dangerous. From what I've heard, that new king has a personality that makes all his ideals come true because he is absolutely right. It seems that he has a personality that says he is absolutely right.

Yeah you're trying to make 'the best-looking idea I've ever had' happen.

'I see. That's a very fitting way of putting it. The upper echelons of Shipland and Old Town also feel a sense of wariness towards him. We, the desert elves, if we recognize the territory they claim from the Burt Kingdom, we will be forced to choose whether to be driven out or follow them, and that new king is a troubled person who thinks too much. Therefore, there is no way that we will pass on your information to the new king.

I see.

I don't trust you completely, but I don't see any particular danger in that at the moment?

'There's another reason I know you're a 'change agent', though.

Is there another one?

'You do not frown upon my wife. Because to a human, my wife is an intolerable Dobbs. To us desert elves, it's the humans who don't see the point in calling a terrible dobus a beautiful woman, and making a mockery of it...it's in very poor taste. But you have the same judgment of female beauty and ugliness that we do. Isn't that the difference?

That's true.

My judgement of beauty and ugliness for desert elf women is exactly the same as my soles.
From the point of view of the people of this world, I may be an oddball, but by the standards of all the people who live in various worlds, I am sure that the people of this world will be judged as oddball.

Will the people of this world ever notice this fact in the future?

'We were forced out of our oasis by the humans, and after struggling to get our mobile city back up and running, we have made it our home. I don't mean to sound bitter, and since we live only in the mobile city, we also trade for stimulation, but when the humans see our desert elven women, they look at us with open sympathy. 'Poor thing. But when humans see our desert elf woman, they look at her and look at her with pity. We, on the contrary, would think, 'How dare he take such an ugly woman with him,' but it is impossible for a grown man to show it blatantly on his face, much less say it directly...'

To me, I understood how Chief Bittershall felt.
It is a state of affairs.
But that shouldn't be spoken by any sensible adult, and no one should understand it in the first place.
But then I was happy to see that the desert elves were like me, so I was happy to have a friend.

''Chief Katoo, we have the same values. Let's get along.

'Yes. I've always thought of myself as isolated.

I make fun of Larabell and the others for being dorks, because from my point of view, I was tired of dealing with creatures that were just draining my spirit.
Major Sander and Baron Stein would be the only ones.
The human men of this world that I felt close to.

'I know how you feel. 'By the way, I have an interesting story to tell you. It is one of the reasons why I found Chief Katoo to be a 'change agent'.

Is it a funny story?

''I would say that this world is crazy only for humans... humans are the most numerous, and since we don't know the values of sand beasts, everyone seems to think it's common knowledge in this world, but...''

'There's a clear contradiction. Why are men's judgments of beauty and ugliness so opposite to women's?

If it were true, it would be strange if the elves were not considered an ugly race, both male and female.
And yet, all the men are rated as beautiful and all the women as dorks.
What is the difference, I wondered, too?

'People don't seem to notice it, do they? No, they don't think it's strange to know that.

Can I know? Maybe!

''Yes. As a matter of fact, the humans of the old Great Desert had the same values as the desert elves.

In other words, it was in a state that Lalabelle and her friends normally thought was beautiful.

'You mean one day?'

''Yes. As a matter of fact, a 'summoner' summoned a long time ago outside of the Kingdom of Burt activated a device that would make the exact opposite judgment of a woman's beauty and ugliness.

A device that reverses a woman's judgment of beauty and ugliness.
And it is only effective for humans?
 It's an amazing device.

The name of this 'reformer' is not known to the public. It's about five hundred years old, but somehow his name hasn't been communicated.

I think he may have crafted this case to keep his name out of it.

'And yet, strangely enough, his diary is still there. The diary was given to us by a merchant who, for some reason, could not pay for the trade and gave it to us in exchange for payment, but it contained an extraordinary amount of information.

Outrageous?

According to Chief Bittershall, that 'change agent' was an excellent researcher.
It is said that most of the types of magic tools used in this world today were invented by him.

''Such a man had a loving wife. He was not a beautiful person. But he loved his wife, who was a good-natured researcher and was devoted to him.

However, there were those who interfered with him as an afterthought.
They were the royalty and nobles who wanted to take him, a brilliant researcher, into their ranks.

'Simply put,' they said, 'Throw away that ugly thing and take our beautiful daughter as your wife.' ' He was furious.

I was suddenly called out of the other world and asked if I was going to meddle in people's private lives when I was contributing to this world.
Who are you people to suggest that I should dump my wife whom I love! So that's why.
It's a big deal, and I think you're right to be angry about it.

'You know the rest, don't you? That's the kind of equipment we've developed and put into operation.

However, he felt that the 'changer' couldn't be bothered with the desert elves, either.
He said that the device only worked on humans and that it was still working.

''So that device is still in operation somewhere in this world.

Are humans aware of the device's existence?

'I don't understand. It was a human merchant who had the diary. I don't think there's no way he wouldn't have read its contents.......it was written in our script. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to read it either.... Maybe the problem is the problem, so they were afraid to reveal the contents to the world, and the fact that I read the diary and didn't think anything about that fact may be an effect of the device.

Because when a woman's judgment of beauty and ugliness is reversed, it doesn't affect the ratio of advantages and disadvantages in any way?
It just reverses the position of the beautiful and the unbeautiful in an instant.

'If the device is shut down or broken, the standard of beauty will just revert back to what it was. Certainly, it wouldn't affect it in any way.

The circumstances of individual women may change a great deal, but in the aggregate, he says, nothing has changed.

It's a fitting device for a 'change agent' to create.

Does Chief Bittershall have no anger towards this man?

Because this device would be a disaster for the elven women.

'No, we live in a mobile city like this, and it only takes a moment for the occasional human to look at us like that or say something bad about us. It only takes a moment for the occasional visitor to look at you like that or say something bad about you.

Apparently the Chief's wife isn't angry at the inventor of the device.
Is it possible that even if she is angry, the only way to improve the current situation is to find the device and destroy it?
I don't know where the device is, though.

'Where is the device, sir?'

You said in your diary that it was a secret.

You're not going to release this information at will.
Most of the Great Desert is a desert, so it might be hard to find it if it's hidden there.
If I get a chance, I'll look for it.

'So, from our point of view, the Katoo chiefs are fellow countrymen with the same values. You're welcome.

Send a mobile city to me.
 Or let's start a war!
I'm glad he didn't say that.

'Ho ho ho ... this is brilliant. Not just sweet, but elegant as well.''

It's so fresh.

I brought him some fine melons and mangoes as gifts, and both the Vital Chief and his wife ate them with relish.
This was the moment I realized that the best gift I could give to the desert elves was fruit.
