　一人執務室に佇むレイン王子は、先ほどミスラから帰還したリンネブルグ王女から報告を受けた内容を頭の中で整理しながら、部屋の隅に置かれた無残に焼け焦げた銀色のドレスを見つめていた.

「……一体、ミスラでどれほどの戦闘があったというのだ」

　妹(リーン)に持たせたこの聖銀(ミスリル)のドレスが、まさかこんな姿になって帰ってくることなど、王子は予想だにしていなかった.

　この白銀のドレスは王子の発注により、考えうる限りの最高の材料をかき集め、またクレイス王国のみならず隣国の魔導皇国全土から最高の職人を呼び集め、世界最高峰の性能を持つ防具(・・)を目指し製作された.

　職人たちは王子の望み通りの『最高の中の最高』の名に恥じない品を生み出す為、最高品質の聖銀(ミスリル)の糸に最高位の魔法金属『王類金属(オリハルコン)』を惜しげも無く織り込み、一つ一つが高品位の魔導具とも言える細かな宝飾を施し────ほぼ三ヶ月間、休みなしで働きこのドレスを完成させた.

　そうして出来上がったのは、ただの式典用のドレスのような見た目からは想像もつかないほどの、過剰とも言える防御性能を誇る『アーマードレス』だった.
　王子が、妹を危険な目に合わせる分せめて、と考えうる限りの手を尽くし、現時点で発見されている第一級の迷宮遺物と並べても何ら引けを取らない、万全を期して作らせた世界最強クラスの防具.

　この一着の開発にあたっては、クレイス王国の国家予算の外交費と防衛費を充てるだけでは全く足りず、補填のために王子が人知れず、所有する財宝や邸宅、土地など金に換えられる物を手当たり次第売り払い、やっとの思いで必要な予算を捻出した.

　費やした金銭は莫大で、結局、王子の手元に残ったのは僅かな資産だった.
　だがその投資に見合った一着が出来上がった.
　妹がミスラに行くことで当然、その身が危機に陥ることも想定されるが、これを身につけてさえいれば、【厄災の魔竜】の爪クラスの攻撃ですら簡単には通さない.

　────その筈だった.

「それが一体、どんな怪物と対峙すればこうなるのだ」

　王子は殆どボロ切れのようになってしまった聖銀(ミスリル)のドレスを眺めながら眉間に皺を寄せた.

　先ほど会った時には何事もなかったかのように元気そうに歩いている彼女からは想像しにくいが────このドレスを見れば、何が起こったのか、嫌でもわかる.

　あの子が、どれだけの無茶をして帰ってきたのかが.
　このドレスは妹(リーン)が【魔聖】オーケンから切り札として渡されていた魔導兵器『神の雷(ケラウノス)』を放つまで、ほぼ無傷であったという.
　それが……一瞬でここまで破壊され焼け焦げた、と.

「あり得んだろう、そんな威力」

　その時の様子を人伝てに聞いたイネスからの報告によれば、彼女(リーン)は魔法を放った瞬間に両腕を失い両目もほぼ失明した、と.

　一歩間違えば、身体ごと消し飛んでいてもおかしくはない.
　いや、このドレスが辛うじて彼女の命を繋ぎ留めたというべきか.
　これがなければ彼女は自分の放った魔法で、瞬時に蒸発していた.

　その後、彼女は力つき、たまたま居合わせた人物が優れた『癒術』の使い手で瀕死の彼女にすぐさま治療を施すことができたから良かったようなものの、実際、命そのものが非常に危なかったという.

　……あの子は、本当に無茶をする.

　いや、妹(リーン)のことだ.
　そのリスクも当然理解していて、全て計算した(・・・・)上での無茶(・・)だろう.
　彼女は時々、そういうことをする.
　普通の人間が思い留まる線を簡単に踏み越え、危ない領域に行ってしまう.

　妹は決して愚かではない.
　おそらく、彼女はギリギリのバランスで自分が助かるとわかっていて(・・・・・・)そういう行動に出ていたのだ. そういう意味では彼女にとっては、きっと危ない賭けでも無茶でもなかったのかもしれない.

　……だが、やられる周囲のものはたまったものではない.
　普段はあの子もそこまでしない.
　そこまでしなければ勝てない相手と判断した、ということだろう.

　彼女(リーン)たちがミスラで対峙したのは、巨大な骸骨のような姿をした化け物だったという. それが、死んだ(・・・)筈の『嘆きの迷宮』の核(コア)の内部(・・)から出現した.

　……それが意味する重大さにも、目が眩む.

「我々、クレイス王国は二百年以上もの長きにわたり、あの国のことを大きく見誤っていた……ということになるのだな」

　妹(リーン)がミスラ教国のティレンス皇子から提供を受けた情報によると、どういうわけかその怪物はあの教皇アスティラと精神を一つにし、政治を直接操っていたのだという.
　そして、そもそもが『神聖ミスラ教国』という国家は、迷宮を踏破した教皇(・・)が建てたのではなく、その魔物が何かの目的を果たす為に建国した国である、という推論も、ティレンス皇子から聞かされた、と彼女(リーン)は付け加えた.

　それが事実だとすれば隣国の我々クレイス王国も、ずっと偽物の偶像を相手にしていたということになる.
　さらにいえば、我らクレイス王家も代々二百年以上もの長きにわたって、いいように欺かれていることに気づきすらせずに、ひたすら『嘆きの迷宮』の中に潜んでいた魔物(・・)と真面目に国交を行なっていた、ということになってしまう. 　

　流石に────その話は背筋が寒くなる.

　自分もリーンも幼少時に、そんな国に留学しに行っていたのだ.
　そればかりか、自分は王都が危機に瀕した時、妹にそんな国への亡命を指示していた.

「……容易には信じがたい話だ」

　悪意のある魔物の建てた国に、そうと知らずに集まった人々が住む.
　そんなことが現実にあるとすれば悪夢の類でしかない.

　だが、教皇アスティラとそっくりの見た目をした『冒険者のアスティラ』と名乗る人物が、『嘆きの迷宮』の核(コア)の中からまだ生きている(・・・・・・・)状態で発見された.
　その事実と、彼女の証言とを突き合わせて考えてみると自ずと結論は出る.

　結果から言えば、ティレンス皇子の推論(読み)は正しかった、ということになる.

　彼は幼少時に自身の『母親』として振舞っている教皇(かいぶつ)の素性に疑問を抱き、それからずっと演技を続けていたのだという.
　そして機を伺って妹(リーン)に恋慕の情があるかのように装って教皇の意図に同調し、声をかけさせ、表向きは敵対するような形でミスラに招き入れ、協力を求めた、ということらしい.

　確か、先日成人の儀を執り行ったばかりの彼は、リーンとは一つしか歳が違わないはずだ. その年齢でそこまでの動きが出来る傑物を見落としていたことを王子は反省し、驚くべき周到さを持った人物として彼の評価を改めた.

　教皇の権力を笠に着た放蕩息子と見られていたティレンス皇子は、実際、ミスラでのリーンから印象を聞いた限り驚くほどに頭の回転の速い人物だった.

　ティレンス皇子はこれから、地下深くから発見されたその『アスティラ』なる人物を、怪物に取り込まれていった以前の前の教皇の代わりに表舞台に立たせ、共に神聖ミスラ教国を治めるつもりだという.

　実質、彼が大国ミスラの実権を握ったということになる. そんなミスラの権力構造の激動と、それを起点とした今後の世界の激動に、まだ王子の思考は十分に追いつかない.

　だが────確実に言えることがある.

「我が国を取り巻く状況は、これで大きく好転する」

　現(・)教皇アスティラと皇子からの申し出により、今後、ミスラは我が国の同盟国となる.
　正式な国家間の合意文書の取り交わしには至っていないが、それもほぼ確定したと言っていい.

　それにより、クレイス王国を取り巻く状況は一変する.
　魔導皇国に加え、周辺三大国のうち、東と西の二国が味方となるのだ.
　これはクレイス王国の全歴史を通しても非常に大きな出来事だ.
　以前のような周辺国との様々なせめぎ合いを、ほぼ気にしなくても済むようになるのは、我が国の歴史ではおそらく初めてのことだ.

　しかも恩恵はそれだけではない.
　本件の補償として皇子ティレンスは、これまでミスラが独占していた『結界技術』を我が国に無償で(・・・)提供することを申し出たという. それも、今まで考えられなかったことだ.

　さらには、今回の事件の一つの発端となった複雑な問題に解決の兆しが出たのも、大きい.

　────魔族の少年、ロロ.
　世界中で忌み嫌われる種族である彼を、クレイス王国で保護すると王(ちち)が宣言した時点から、我が国は以前より更に難しい立場に立たされることになった.
　だが、その難しい状況がほぼ一夜にして変化の兆しを見せたのだ.

　ロロは【魔聖】オーケンに渡された『召喚の指輪』に【厄災の魔竜】を封じ込め、ミスラに人知れず持ち込んだ. そして戦闘になると彼(ロロ)はミスラの市街地のほぼ中心で『召喚の指輪(それ)』を用い、【厄災の魔竜】を召喚したという.

　当然、その様子は多くの人々が目にするところとなった.
　人々が目にしたのは、国を危機に晒した怪物と対峙する竜と、それを操る魔族の姿.
　おそらく、その姿は人によっては禍々しいものと映っただろう.
　だが魔族の少年に召喚された竜が、街を護るように戦ったのを多くの人々が現実の光景として目にした.
　その戦いの壮絶な光景と共に多くの人々の記憶に刻まれた.

　その事実自体もロロの立場自体を大きく改善するが、何より、魔族と敵対し迫害していた筈のミスラ教国が、魔族に護られた(・・・・・・・)という事実を基にして、現(・)教皇が公式の声明を出すという.

　そう遠くない時期に、ミスラ教国は長きに渡る魔族との戦いの『終息宣言』を出す.
　今回の事件を契機に、魔族への迫害をやめるよう、現教皇が今後、声明の中で呼びかけるという.
　世界中の国が注目している中で、全世界に散らばるミスラ教徒のみならず、教会のネットワークを通して関係のある国に訴えかける.
　影響は計り知れない. 歴史的とも言える変化だ.

　だが未だに魔族を嫌うものは多い.
　当然、軋轢は生まれるだろう.
　過去に家を失い国を失った恨みは容易には消えることがない.
　とはいえ、ロロを保護する我が国の立場としては、この上なく状況が好転したことになる.

　……彼(ロロ)は今回、誰も期待していなかった大仕事をやり遂げたことになる.

「本当に、予想だにし得なかった展開だ」

　まさか、この数日間でここまで状況が一転するとは思いもしなかった.

　王子の想定では今後、クレイス王国を取り巻く環境がより厳しくなることは確実だった.
　というより、妹があの国に『招待』された時点で、我が国が大国ミスラ教国とより険悪な関係になり、戦争状態に突入することもほぼ確定していた. すでに王(ちち)が実質的な教皇の最後通牒を断った後の話だからだ.

　その為、おそらく妹(リーン)の入国を最後に今後の外交は絶たれ、最悪、国境の行き来も全くできなくなる. その事態を見越して、王子はイネスとロロにリスクの大きい『嘆きの迷宮』内部への潜入を命じていたのだが.
　全ては取り越し苦労となったようだった.

「こんなに早く、ケリがついてしまうとは」

　王子は以前からミスラに潜入させていたカルー配下の諜報員からの情報を元に、今回の妹たちのミスラへの入国に乗じて、薄暗い闇の中で行われる残酷な行為を伴う『悪魔の心臓』製造の物証を掴み、ミスラの『魔族』に対する政策を非難する材料を得ようとしていた.

　そうして、それを明るみに出すことで『魔族』保護に舵を切ったクレイス王国への各国からの批判を和らげつつ、ミスラとの関係が良くない国々と協調し、次第にクレイス王国の状況を改善させていく……という、非常に長期に及ぶ戦いを覚悟していた.

　最悪、それが数十年にも及ぶ長期の争いになることも想定した. そのような長期戦は以前なら無謀とも思えたが、魔導皇国と比較的良好な関係を築けた今、持久戦にも耐えうるだけの状況にあると判断し、かなり強引な作戦を命じたのだ.

　それは勝つ為の選択というより、負けない為の選択だった.
　王(ちち)が魔族(ロロ)を受け容れる判断を下した以上、すでに相手国(ミスラ)との争いを避ける手立てはない.
　となると今後、多数の国を巻き込んだ泥仕合い的な情報戦となることは必至で、勢力に劣る我が国は一方的にやられることになる.
　そう判断し、王子は機に乗じて相手への反撃の材料を一つでも二つでも盗み出しておく、という消極的な賭けを試みたのだが.

　その全てが杞憂に終わった.
　大きな肩の荷が下りた王子は、小さくため息をつく.

「何から何まで……助けられてしまったな」

　ここまで現実が想定の外を行っているとは思いもしなかった.
　状況を把握して命令を出す立場の自分としては、普段の仕事が不十分だったとしか言えない.
　必要な情報を、必要な時までに満足に集められなかった.
　そのせいでみすみす妹たちを危険に晒してしまったのだ.
　反省点を挙げればキリがない. 　完全な失態だろう.

　だが、そんな中でも妹たちは見事にやり遂げたのだ.
　王子が想定していた最高の筋書きをはるかに上回る、望外極まる成果を無事に持ち帰った.
　王子の失敗を彼女たちに助けられたという他ない.

「助けられた、と言えば……あの男」

　リーンたちが今回、ミスラで出した成果は山ほどある.
　とはいえ、やはりあの男が鍵となった.
　妹(リーン)が必ず連れていきたいと願ったあの男.
　あの男が今回、飛び抜けて大きな役割を演じた.

「ノール」

　妹があの男をミスラに連れて行くと言った時、王子は異存はなかったが、不安はあった.

　王子は、あの男に対してさほど悪い感情を抱いているというわけでもない.
　あの男は見るからに純朴で裏表がなさそうな、いかにも王(ちち)や妹が好む種類の人物であり、王子自身も人格には問題があるとは思ってはいない.

　だがそれだけに、王侯貴族の社交界に混じってまともに振る舞えるような人物には思えない. 脇に抱える武力としては申し分ないが、そんな男が我が国と緊張関係にあるミスラ教国に入り込めば、何をしでかすかわからない……といった不安があった.

　だが、あの男は本当に何かしでかしてくれたらしい.
　それも相当に良い形で.

　聞けば、教皇の手によって厳重に結界が張り巡らされていた『嘆きの迷宮』の奥に真っ先に入り込み、鍵となった女性『冒険者のアスティラ』を救出したのはあの男だという.
　同時に迷宮の核(コア)の中に潜む怪物と対峙し、最後まで倒しきったのも『黒い剣』を持つあの男だということだった.
　おそらく、あの男が迷宮の床を突き破り最初に『冒険者のアスティラ』を連れ出さなければ、ここまでの事態の好転はなかった.

　────否.
　それどころか、王子が危惧した最悪中の最悪のシナリオにさえ突き進んでいたことだろう. それよりも、もっと酷いことになっていてもおかしくはない.

　それに、おそらくあの男がいなければ……妹は.

「……本当に、俺はあの男に感謝しなければならないのだろうな」

　王子はこれまでのあの男の働きを過小評価しているつもりはない.
　知る存在こそ少ないが、あの男は我がクレイス王国にとってはもう英雄のごとき存在だ.

　特に今回はあの男がいたからこそ妹は無事に帰ってこれたのだと言ってもいい.

　代々クレイス王家は冒険者ギルドには互いに独立した機関として敬意を払いギルドの運営にはずっと不干渉を貫いている. 王子もそれは弁えている.
　だが一度、気になって王都のギルドマスターに男の『ランク』の件をそれとなく尋ねてみたことがある. そうしてマスターから返ってきた答えは「俺も正直よくわからんが……本人の希望なんだよなぁ」と要領を得ないものだった.

　本人の希望とは、さらに奇妙な話だと思った.
