九階の階段前の仕組みだが、数日試してみて新たにいくつかの事柄が判明した.

　まず倒し方だが、唯一の雌であるボスワーラットを真っ先に仕留めるのが、やはり正解であったらしい.
　これをせずに先に取り巻きの雄を倒してしまったり、同時に片付けたりすると次に発生する際に魔物の数が増えてしまう.
　なんか交尾っぽい行為をしていたが、正しく雌だけ先に仕留めれば問題はないようだ.

　次にワーラットの増え方だが、二体ずつだと思っていたらこれは間違っていた.
　再検証の二日目は九体、三日目は十一体であったが、四日目に十五体にいきなり増えたのだ.
　さらに五日目、二十三体という芋洗い状態ならぬワーラット洗い状態が発生したことで実験は打ち切りになった.

　おそらく単純な計算だが七体が固定値で、そこに二体、四体、八体と倍々に増加した分が加算されているのではないだろうか.
　もっとも俺の推測を立証するには、もうちょっとデータが必要ではあるが…….

　二十匹を超えた時点で、階段前はぎゅうぎゅう詰めだったのだ.
　うっかり雌を仕留めそこなったらと思うと、怖すぎて試す気にはなれない.

　多分、上限が存在するとは思うのだが、それに関してもちょっと疑問である.
　さほど広くない九階だが、階段前のワーラットが増えても、他の魔物の数はそのままであったのだ.

　前提である階層ごとの魔素の量云々が間違っているのか、それとも何か見落とした要素があるのか.
　詳しく調べるには人手も時間も足りないため、今は心の片隅に置いておくことにした.
　まあ、ワーラットの数が増えてくれるのなら、いろいろと使い途自体はあることだしな.

　さていろいろ頑張りつつも、新方針を打ち出して一週間.
　事態はおおむね、いい方向へと向かっていた.

　五階、西壁の池の前.
　ここでは数人の村人たちが、作業の仕上がりを見届けている最中であった.

「よーし、開くぞ！」
「おう！」

　声を掛け合った農夫たちは、水路と池を隔てていた大きな木の板をがっしりと掴んだ.
　そして渾身の力を込めて、真上へと引っ張る.

　水圧がかかっているせいか、最初はなかなか動こうとしない木板.
　だが少しずつ持ち上がり、それに合わせて池の水が激しく渦を巻き始めた.
　同時にその反対側、空っぽの水路には、透き通った水が勢いを増しながらたちまち流れ込んでいく.

　みるみる満たされていく水路の姿に、村人たちはいっせいに喝采を上げた.

「おおお！」
「上手くいったべ！」

　口々に喜びの声を上げて、村人たちはまたたく間に走り去った水流の先頭を追いかけだす.
　その背中を見送りながら、村長を務めるディルクはゆっくりと唇の端を持ち上げた.

「……ふう、なんとか仕上がりましたか」
「ええ、見事な仕事ぶり、感服いたしました. あの方もきっとお喜びになるでしょうね」

　褐色の肌を持つ魔人種の女性の言葉に、ディルクはわずかに首を横に振った.

「いえ、私どもなどまだまだでございます. 今回もパウラ様のお力添えがあってこそですから」

　事実、水路のほとんどを掘り進んだのは、パウラが<従属>させた大ミミズ二匹の仕事であった.
　その上、今回も井戸の時と同様に体液（おしっこ）を側面の土に塗り込んでしっかり固め、水が地面に染み込まない工夫までしてくれている.
