3-Episode 2 Major Thunder

Mister Tullow, it's Major Thunder.

"So you're the 'change agent' this time. There's a rumor going around that you're not in a very good mood.

Maybe it's because he's such an ordinary uncle.

I don't see the connection between looks and talent, but it's troubling to me that His Majesty can't see beyond the surface of things.

"Major Sander, that's a dangerous thing to say.

'I know Baron Stein says a lot of things behind my back. You can't say that about anyone.

Not as much as some of the other noblemen.

'I agree with you about your assessment of His Majesty, but they don't have much to say about people either.

'It's hard not to talk back. Well, I'm not a big boy.

When they arrived at the barracks with Baron Stein's guidance, Major Sander, who had heard the story, appeared.
He had red-copper skin, a well-trained body, and a large cut mark on his left cheek, and he looked like a brave man of the past.
His age was the same as Baron Stein's, and I don't think he's that different from me.
 Now there are three Alafors.
At first glance, he looks strong, but from listening to his conversation with Baron Stein, he seems to be a friendly person.

''This is your last apprenticeship before retiring from the military. It's not every day that a 'change agent' is trained. After all, they only come once every fifty years.

What, you're retiring after all? As usual, the whole Army is full of idiots for decommissioning Major Sander.

''I guess that's the limit of the 'Commoner Marshal'. He said that he had to take some great nobleman's stupid son into the army with his connections and suddenly make him a major. So that's why I, a commoner, was played. It's not like the Kingdom of Bart is in tension with any country right now. You don't mind if I'm a scarecrow.

'With less water? I've heard the seas are small, too, but still, there's little conflict?

Huh, Baron Stein can only take care of you? He's a hundred times smarter than that stupid aristocrat.

Major Sander complimented me on it, but in my case, I'm just an uncle for nothing.
There's no war, so there's no sense of urgency, and so I just thought it didn't matter how different the world was as opposed to large organizations doing that kind of thing.
I just thought it's just like that, because stories of idiots coming into a company with management or big business connections and making people uncomfortable around them, it's just the same thing everywhere.

'The seas of this world are in an oligopoly in four countries, including the Kingdom of Bart. It's not only that, but it's also that this world is full of deserts, and there are many sand beasts living in the deserts. We can't afford to go to war.

If you could afford it, would you hunt sand beasts?

That's what I'm talking about.

There are many countries in the Great Desert, but only four, including the Kingdom of Burt, are in contact with the sea.
Should we look at the other countries as living off of rivers, oases, groundwater, etc.?
With this, it might be difficult to have a war between nations.
It's likely that we won't be able to march into enemy territory because of the lack of water.

''The sand beasts will soon try to enter human territory. Those sand beasts are what the military does most of the time.

And you're going to decommission Major Sander?

'Hey, hey, don't call me "lord". I'm not a nobleman's idiot, you know. You're a reformer, so you don't know it, but in the military, when you're from a noble family, you have to put a 'lord' after your rank. The rule is that commoners don't have a 'tono' after their rank.

Is there a rule against that?

Among other things.

'Commoner Marshal. In other words, can't a person from a commoner's background be more than a major?

You know exactly what I mean. You know what I'm talking about. I'm an officer's candidate for military school. I'm not much better than that.

Most common-school graduates finish their service as captains.

According to Baron Stein, the fact that Major Sander was able to be promoted to Major during his time on active duty was proof that he was regarded as a ridiculously talented man.

Normally, he's retired after being made a major by mercy at the end of his service. That means that Major Sander, who is now a major and is still on active duty, is a very good major. Soldiers pay their respects to a commoner who has become a major by calling him 'Commoner General.

So it's just as difficult to become a major from a commoner's background as it is for a soldier from an aristocratic background to become a marshal?
I mean, how can there be no shortage of officers in such a system?

''Because a nobleman can become a colonel no matter how incompetent he is.

Is that kind of aristocracy-first promotion system in place so that there is no shortage of officers themselves?
So the children of incompetent aristocrats are pushed into the army and foiled.
And because of that, Major Sander, who is from a commoner's background, will have to retire from the army when he's forty or so.

'Not for me, though. I'll just be a hunter.

Are you a hunter?

'Hunters are the people who hunt sand beasts for a living.

 Baron Stein told me.
The most prosperous race or rather creature in this world was undoubtedly the sand beasts that could live in the desert.
Moreover, they would always try to invade human territory and try to turn the land outside of the desert into a desert.
If the human territory was further reduced, humans would decline, so the armies of each country made hunting sand beasts their main business, rather than war.

However, I don't know about the other countries, but in the Baat Kingdom, the majority of the military commanders are nobles.

I don't know about other countries, but in the Kingdom of Baat, the majority of military commanders are nobles. In terms of income, the hunters make more money.

Major Thunder doesn't seem to have much left in the military.
If he's as good as he is, can he make more money by becoming a hunter than forcing himself to stay in the military?
And since he's also a good military man, he would make more money if he commanded the hunters and hunted the sand beasts efficiently.

'This is why the army is weak again. As a nobleman, it's a headache.''

Nevertheless, if he told that to the incompetent military aristocracy, it would cause a major rift.
Baron Stein would be able to do nothing but lament.

''Ah, but. Since the aristocrat's children seem to be on a high level, wouldn't they step forward and fight the sand beasts?''

'No way. They're just warming up their seats more often than not. 'Charge!' to the soldiers. And it's just a job to order them to stand back and watch. I'm sure there are many better commanders than the hunters who have to deal with the day-to-day life and safety of life.

Does every commoner, good and strong, become a hunter?
I wonder if that's why the Kingdom of Bart is so strong.
Is it okay because there are no wars with other countries?

''You haven't heard your name.

Taro Kato.

Are you a nobleman?

''However, there's no difference between commoners and nobles like there is in this country. Besides, it means you're a nobleman in another world, so don't worry about it.

You're an odd little aristocrat, aren't you?

In truth, I'm not a nobleman........
Apparently, Major Sander doesn't like aristocrats, so he decided that it was better not to push the fact that he was an aristocrat too much.
It's a dirty decision typical of an uncle.

''We'll start training tomorrow, but before that, we'll provide you with some clothes.

These clothes aren't good, are they?

Purple suits are not normally worn without your permission, Your Majesty.

Since it was me, a dull man, wearing it, it's only natural that the king should lose his temper.
I'll change out of my clothes as soon as possible, but then a young officer-like figure showed up.
As soon as he saw my clothes, he cursed at me in a fierce voice.

''Even if you're a 'transformer' or an aristocrat from another world, I won't tolerate your clothes! You can only wear purple clothes that His Majesty approves of!

Lieutenant Dorund, I'm going to get you dressed now.

Major Sander is a slow learner, sir.

Major Sander is a superior officer, but he's giving his subordinate, an officer of noble birth, a "lord"?
It's a good thing that the aristocrat Lieutenant Dorndt has a lot to say to his superior officer, Major Sander.
Moreover, since it is not blameless, we must be very careful about the status difference in this world.

(Though there are many people who wear purple indoors. (Though purple clothes themselves are difficult to obtain.)

Gently whispering, Baron Stein told me the situation behind the scenes.
It seems that you need the king's permission to wear purple clothing outside, but it's not a problem to wear it indoors.
However, he said there are big restrictions on the sale of purple clothes, so it's not so easy to buy them.

The shops that sell the cloth and clothes are also punished for selling purple clothes to people who do not have the king's permission, and the shops do not stock them because they do not sell in large numbers.
If you want to wear purple clothes in the house, you have to get a second-hand one from someone who has permission to do so, but of course, if you are caught selling them, the king will punish you.

It's a very silly story when you look at it from the side, but that world has its own set of circumstances.
I don't think it's a good idea to criticize or make fun of it outwardly.
 Let's keep quiet.
